I will always love you
as the man you
could never
become.

I will always love you
as the man you
could never
become.
Like clockwork
Every two weeks
You decide to fade away
And just like clockwork
Another two weeks pass
Before you say you’ve changed
Like clockwork
The words you promise me
Never match your actions
And just like clockwork
Every lie burns me
Leaving me in ashes
Like clockwork
Two weeks have passed
And you’ve decided to leave
And just like clockwork
I swallow my pride –
Praying for unpredictability.
There’s a silent killer
It creeps into your mind
And when he says something,
When he feeds you those lines
There’s a silent killer
Telling you to believe him
And maybe, just maybe, this time
He really means it
That tiny little voice
Your mind has tried to kill
Knows the things to say –
Knows the strings to pull
That little quiet voice
Lingering in the back
Tells you he’s sincere
He’ll give all he can
Anything to make it work
To give “us” another try
To be who he was at the beginning
To be that great guy
The guy who made you fall
Made you smile and made you laugh
The guy who took you to dinner
The guy who texted you back
He’ll do whatever it may take
Because he misses you so much
He can’t imagine anyone else
Receiving all your touches
So the silent killer
Creeps into your mind
And maybe even convinces you
This time he isn’t lying
But it’s a silent killer
Killing you more each day
Every day’s a slower death
Stealing your breath away
This silent killer has a name
The silent killer is false hope
Because he will never be –
things will never be –
the way they were before.
Sometimes love is cruel
You’re meant for them
but they aren’t meant for you
Sometimes love is blind
You can feel it and crave it
but it’s not the right time
Sometimes love is harsh
You can want more for them
than you do for yourself
Sometimes love is tired
You can fight all you want
but the flame won’t make fire
Sometimes love is numb
You can break too much
when you think they’re the one
Sometimes love leaves
lingering on your heart –
right there on your sleeve
Sometimes love is cruel
it’s better to just let go
than to try and hold onto.
So you say
You’re never drinking again
And at the end of the day
The loneliness sits in
So you fill the cup
And you take a sip
Allowing yourself
To get lost in it
Then the next morning
You feel the pain
The sting of regret
Keeps happening
And you make promises
Telling yourself
No more drinking
It’s bad for your health
Like a broken record
It plays again
When you’re with everyone
Even with friends
You crave a sip
You say “just tonight”
And promise yourself –
It’s the last time
But the drink is poison
And it takes control
Intoxicating addiction
Dangerous yet wonderful
Then the next morning
You tell yourself
It was the last time
Put the bottle on the shelf
So you say
You’re never drinking again
But towards the end of the day
The loneliness sits in
So you call him up
For one last fix
You lie to your heart
And say this is it.
